1.
I can see the drive and read from it but I cannot write
to it.
When you’re able to see the drive but cannot write
to the drive, it’s likely because the drive is using
a limited file system. Example, NTFS. Unfortunately,
the only way to fix this is to reformat it to the factory
format or the MAC OS file system. Note: Formatting the
drive will erase all data on the drive. If you format
to the MAC OS file system, it will make it ONLY compatible
with MAC OS X.
To format to the MAC OS file system please do the following:
- Open the MAC OS drive
- Open the Application folder
- Open the Utilities folder
- Open the DISK UTILITY
- Select the POCKETEC drive
- Select the Erase tab
- Select MAC OS EXTENDED
- Click on Erase
To restore the drive to the factory format, you’ll
need access to a Windows 98SE computer. Or you a third
party conversion software such as partition magic.
2. When
I transfer files I get an error code -50.
This error is caused by an invalid character in the file
name. Because the POCKETEC drives come preformatted to
FAT32, some characters such as: : ; / and \ are considered
invalid. You will need to reformat the POCKETEC drive
by doing the following: (Note: this will erase all data
on the drive and make it compatible with ONLY MAC OS X)
- Open the MAC OS drive
- Open the Application folder
- Open the Utilities folder
- Open the DISK UTILITY
- Select the POCKETEC drive
- Select the Erase tab
- Select MAC OS EXTENDED
- Click on Erase
After the format is completed, you will now be able
to copy files with those characters without error.

3.
I cannot see the drive.
Let’s start by narrowing down the issue.
Please check the following common errors:
- Make sure the drive is using the cable provided
with it. Do not use a 3rd party cable as it may cause
issues.
- Make sure you connect the cable from the drive
directly to a USB port ON the computer. Do not connect
it to the keyboard, print, mouse or other USB peripheral.
- Make sure the LED light is on.
- Try using the USB power cable. (Tip: this is the
cable with 2 USB connections on it, you’ll need
to plug both USB connectors in so you’ll need
2 USB ports).
With MAC, it’s pretty straight forward and there’s
really not much trouble shooting that can be done. Please
check the following:
- Plug in and turn on the POCKETEC drive
- Open your MAC Hard Drive
- Open the Applications folder
- Open the Utilities folder
- Open the System Profiler utility
- On the left side under Hardware, scroll down to
the USB
- Select the USB and expand it
- You should see a USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE or USB
2.0 STORAGE ADAPTER
- If you select this device, it should say Manufacturer
POCKETEC
If you selected USB 2.0 STORAGE ADAPTER it’s
likely a driver conflict you’re having. You’ll
need to uninstall the drivers. To uninstall the drivers
for MAC OS X, it’s a little complicated so please
be sure to read this next portion carefully. (Note:
the drive should be connected and on during this process)
- Go back to the Utilities folder (MAC HD > Applications)
- This next part is case sensitive and also requires
you to be in the Administrator account. Type in: cd
/ /system/library/extensions
- Press enter/return. If done correctly the line
should change to <username>/system/library/extensions.
If you got an error that means something was misspelled
or you tried to copy/paste the command in. Re-do it
if you need to.
- Type in: sudo rm –rf com_cy_driver_USB_Device.kext
- Press enter/return.
- Enter your password. If none, press enter/return.
(Note: This is a keylog entry and will not show what
you type)
- Type in: exit
- Press enter/return.
- Restart your computer. (Note: the drive should
still be connected and on at this point)
- After the computer restarts, it may take a minute
or two for the drive to register on the desktop. If
you still do not see it. Turn the drive off, wait
1 minute and re-connect the drive. It should be working
now.
If you continue to have difficulties, please send your
drive in for service, you can get your RMA#
